Little Gear: Diaper Bags Take One

Diaper Bags Round 1

That's right, it's diaper bag time! This seems to be one of the most difficult decisions because it's so public and connected to each mom's unique style. These days no one wants a little padded bag covered in Disney characters, and there's a serious market out there for designer diaper bags easily running $250+.

When you consider that actual human fluids are going to come into contact with these bags, the idea of spending hundreds is almost painful. At the same time, I do understand moms who feel like as their accessory, diaper bags really are part of their personal style and shouldn't need to be a compromise area like so many other pieces of baby gear.

Right now I've got three styles of bag on the mind:

  • Mod 60's florals that are cheerful and bright without being childish or too baby-centered.
  • Classic totes like my daily teal Coach bag, with a single smooth color and my normal tote bag silhouette.
  • Backpacks and convertible backpacks. One advantage here is that s simpler one could work for The Boy, too. And I seem to keep seeing that running after a baby is a two-handed job and that moms appreciate being able to throw their diaper bag on their back and carry baby in front.

Current Favorites: The Petunia Picklebottoms in green (1st row) and embossed grey (2nd row), both Orla Kielys (1st row), and the 2 Skip Hip Forma backpacks (3rd row).

The big advantage here is that I haven't fallen in love just yet with anything over $100, and some of them are half that. That means I can have two so I can mix it up, right? 😄

My other thought is that baby will need a bag of his/her own to take to and from daycare. It's normal not to use your own favorite diaper bag for that, so we're looking at another simple bag that can go to and from care. Maybe thats the backpack opportunity?

Besides getting into vintage Coach bags for a little bit I've never been a super bag person, and certainly never needing to buy a bag on a timeline quite like this. We'll see what I end up with this summer!
