Fashion: Return of the Monarch

Alexander McQueen (RIP) was a well known fashion god, working in an entirely different realm than the competition, and bringing the outlandish to life with poise. I ran across some photos of his Monarch pieces the other day, and was just floored.

Butterflies are one of those pieces that woman tend to abandon from ages 13-25. Every little girl loves a butterfly, mostly in pink and purple glitter, and it can be hard to come back to them with a womanly presence when you're a little older.

In McQueen's case, the monarch is just stunningly executed in his collection, and it got me thinking about other adult butterfly interpretations. They can be subtle and more of an antique nature study textbook vibe, or dramatic and absurd and playful.

Case in point, fascinators that I would kill to see the Duchess of Cambridge in:

For the adventurous dresser, embracing an entire slew of butterflies seems like a solid choice and a black base is a great way to balance the intricacy of the wings.

These throat touches are lively with a conservative collar gone whimsical, and an explosion of wings in this gossamer necklace.

Another easy arena is in flats. Everyone just seems to expect flats to be a bit kitsch and fun these days.

I only recently stumbled upon the vintage, nature inspired watches of Olivia Burton, and of course she has some great butterfly pieces. I was actually pretty upset to realize that the one on the right was sold out at Modcloth.

What do you think? Are they still a bit too little girl's dress-up for you, or do you see a chance for some bold sophistication?
