This is a woman who looks better at seven months pregnant in chiffon than I ever have in stilettos and a mini skirt. She definitely has the Alexa Chung advantage, by which I mean she is long limbed and rail thin, so the very drape of an item is instantly flattering. She doesn't have a buxom or defined figure, so she doesn't need to focus on accentuating the waist or bust and can instead just rock all over patterns and textures that would highlight all the wrong areas on a larger woman.
She's actually pretty conservative when you look at her coverage area and I was in for a bit of a surprise about her use of color. Although I always picture her in romantic prints and patterns, we're also going to take a look at her surprising #1 color choice.
On the left, the nude base is crawling with greenery on an otherwise simple sheath. The large embroidery on the center dress is pretty shapeless, but the green detailing the sides and waist visually defines her figure. Finally, a lot of people are doing the lace illusion sleeves, but she takes it an extra step with the bird detailing.
I also think of Keira using her model frame to get away with kind of weird accents like these studs and a three part cutout neckline.
This was a real surprise to me the more I looked, but Keira's version of an LBD seems to be an LWD. On the red carpet, the LWD is embellished with one or two glam accents.
For less formal appearances, she just shortens the hemline and adds more texture. She's a Chanel muse for a reason, and these are a very ladylike, defined 50s style but with less volume in the skirt.
It even translates to street style when she wears this long white eyelet dress in place of a maxi dress. As a note, her most recent street style since having her baby has been super, super menswear influenced. Almost nothing but cuffed baggy boyfriend jeans, hardcore boots and thick tops!
As a final aside, little does she know she also inspired my fantasy elopement dress. When she ran off to the church with her now husband, she wore a Chanel blush pink ballerina dress that she's been able to wear again!
