Second Look: The Bow

I love a good grown-up bow and designers like Kate Spade have done an amazing job of bringing the bow into the sophisticated, chic woman's wardrobe. When done right, bows are so playful and can serve as the signature detail on an otherwise classic, simple piece.

Here a little red dress goes from vamp to ladylike with the addition of shoulder bows.

I love the way that the rich mustard color avoids the usual pink territory, and the bow is at jaunty angle almost like a lapel pin.

This Kate Spade coat turns the bow into a larger, slightly more lopsided collar detail. It definitely makes a stronger statement, and one advantage is the clear attachment to only one side of the jacket keeping it from tilting like above.

Combining a bow with scalloped edges is pure gold. Scalloping is coming back into fashion like no one's business, and here it adds an even saucier edge to the bow inspired bikini top.

If you want to really up the prep factor, LaurenJames.com has a ton of seersucker pieces with wide bows that just scream Summer in the South.

If you'd like a more subtle option, go for earrings or a brooch, or look for a bow texture in the fabric itself. Pearls are not required!

And if you don't feel like being coy or sophisticated in the slightest, just cut right to the chase and make a giant Disney Princess themed bow and own it.

What do you think? Do bows belong exclusively on cheerleaders and toddlers or can you see them sneaking into your closet?

  1. I've always liked a bow. Look at how decorative these are. Wow. I hope you grace your husband with a bow or two. I'm so jealous!
