The dreaded ginger jars! |
When people think of blue and white in home decor, they tend to think of Chinese Ginger Jars. There's a concern that these are a bit too traditional, a bit too overdone, a bit too Emily Gilmore on the terrace if you will. When you think something exists strictly to hold fake flowers in Colonial foyers, you stop appreciating it's design value.
But sometimes the classic linger because they truly are a feast for the eye, and in this case blue and white is still the recipe for modern refinement and sophistication. It's not a warm palate, but it doesn't have the starkness of a black or gold. There's something crisp about blue and white. Let's take a look at some great pairings!
These Mediterranean blues feel like a wispy, airy day on a Greek Island. Here we're leaning away from navy but still avoiding the greenish aqua. This would be a great color pop for a living room!
Unlike the intricate Ginger Jars, these crockery pieces are sleek with playful flowers on the left and simple repeating sweeps on the right that are remarkably restrained.
If you do appreciate small repeating patterns, tiling is a great way to bring blue and white into the home. Plus white tile will stay a heck of a lot cleaner than anything else! These stairs and bathroom sink could easily be the focal point of a room.
Sometimes you can take a crockery-esque pattern and put it on fabric to amazing effect. The column dress on Dianne Kruger is decidedly Grecian, and the model on the left has a shift that could transition from ice cream on the board walk to a cocktail party.
And of course, there's whimsy. I am so, so tempted to take this bright aquamarine blue wallpaper and throw it into a walkthrough area or hallway and really let it pop. How could you be in a bad mood with pineapples around? Or, go with a slightly richer blue and a more traditional floral, then add a mod touch with sleek candy apple red.
May you all blue and white to your hearts' content!
