This fantastic chart exists for a reason. Regina is in many ways absolutely insane, but good Lord does that woman know how to make a statement! Regina wears black, dark grey, medium grey, and every now and again a splash of red, plum or burgundy just to remind us that she can. The detailing and tailoring is always hard and severe without a trace of floaty, bohemian vibes.
When it comes to the OUAT world, the costume department does an absurdly talented job of differentiating their characters. In this case, the sugary sweet Mary Margaret/Snow White vs. her mortal enemy (and sometimes step-mother) Queen Regina.
You know what isn't intimidating? Florals, petite patterns, and pastels. There is a very clear contrast made between Mary Margaret/Snow White (whose apartment is shabby chic, and who seems to always be on her way to Easter brunch) and Regina who seems to take a split second each morning to ensure that if she wants to deliver death threats post-breakfast, her wardrobe is going to scream authenticity. So let's take a gander!
Regina doesn't wear black in the way that a middle aged woman wears black to blend. She wears her black with distinct textures and harsh hardware details. On both of these coats, there are splashes of leather and exaggerated collars to emphasize her presence.
It may be Storybook but it's still Maine, so Regina keeps her winter game on point with long, thick wool jackets. Sometimes she even goes crazy and wears dark grey instead of black. Lana Parilla isn't a particularly tall woman, so she makes sure to elongate with thigh or knee length jackets. Also note those consistent black leather knee high boots. Sometimes with a slight heel and sometimes without. A woman with that silhouette and those boots is not someone to accept an apple pie from.
Her keyhole tops are reminiscent of the fastening of a cloak collar, which makes total sense for our fairy tale queen. They also tend to be where she adds that splash of color. In this case, blood red. Because the Queen may be evil, but she also knows that she's hot.
Regina dresses like a particularly fabulous career woman. She never feels compelled to oversell what she's got, but the tailoring is always so spot on that it completely grabs attention. Here she's in another of her tailored blazers, but the white and black detailing make it seem a bit younger and more fun. She's the perfect blend of powerful and feminine.
I think we've learned a valuable lesson here. If you're looking to do evil deeds, ladies, wear black!
Wow Love Regina. My Wife and I used to watch this show. Always loved one of Regina's Evil Phases. When am I getting my next article!!?
