Today, I'd like to offer a shout out to a variety of women engaged in interesting projects that you may not be aware of.
Karlie Kloss is not only my favorite super model, but she's also a good American gal from St. Louis, busily running her own empire. She's got her cookie business Karlie's Kookies, models up a storm across the world, and currently studies at NYU. The reason she's my crush right now is because of her initiative offering scholarships and training opportunities for young girls to train to code via her Kode with Klossy program.
Olivia Firth, wife of Colin Firth, has embarked on a serious commitment to wearing eco-friendly yet fashionable designs on the red carpet. She's featured in The True Cost, a documentary about the real cost of fast fashion, and calls her campaign for sustainability in fashion The Green Carpet. Celebrities essentially wear everything once and then can't repeat the outfit, and their best option is to donate the clothes to benefit charity. The Green Carpet is a wonderful alternative!
Now that I'm at Book 73 out of 90 in my 2016 Reading Challenge, I'm realizing how much time has to be devoted to hunting down books worth reading. Besides taking recommendations from my Book Coven, I've found my favorite book reviewer via Goodreads and Instagram. Wendy Darling has impeccable taste, and I love getting a glimpse of all the ARCs and merchandise she receives before books launch.
Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere is like my older cousin inspiration. How did I not know about her before? Normally, I'll just check a design book out of the library, give it a good breeze through, and snap photos of any pages that have info that I'd particularly like to hold onto. In this case. I want her house, and her pantry, and her wardrobe. And there comes a point when taking a snapshot every other page flip just gets weird. As we may remember, I'm KonMari-ing up the wazoo recently, but in this case I think I've finally found a reference bible that I need to own and refer back to.
The new Beauty & the Beast movie with Emma Watson has a delightful new backstory for a new generation! Not only does Belle love books (yay little introverts) but she is also an inventor. So much agency, so much intellect, thank you Disney of 2016! And I have to believe that there's a cluster of great ladies at Disney responsible for rewriting the book on this one.
And ultimately, after the depressing pile of actual horse shit that we call an Election, I really needed to find a bright spot in life. Fortunately, Susan B. Anthony's gravestone covered in "I Voted" stickers never fails to make me hopeful. Because if the original Suffragettes can put up with hunger strikes and beatings and being denied their basic civil rights, I can accept a lost election with grace and a determination to keep fighting ruthlessly for progress. Thank you, Pantsuit Nation, for keeping the flame burning!
Mental note to self, do not go so long without doing Women Crush Wednesday again. Seeking out positivity is a good choice in general, but female empowerment requires all of us joining together to actively seek out what makes women amazing.
