Our inaugural fashion crush is Mary
Goodwin, one half of the science wonder twins behind tech giant
Looking Glass, on Fox's Second Chance. Mary is played by the magnetic
Dilshad Vadsaria.
Mary is the public face and
logistical prowess behind one of America's biggest tech innovators. While her
brother invents in his labs, Mary brings their tech to the masses and navigates
between employees, shareholders, and the press.
What I love about Mary's wardrobe is the use of streamlined silhouettes to tame strong color and aggressive, abstract patterns. It makes me wonder if the writers are modeling her after Yahoo's Marissa Meyer, a known lover of high fashion.
The first rule to note is that it's
never about the accessories with Mary. She veers towards simple earrings, sleek
hair, and is suspiciously watch-less.
This means that her dresses get the
chance to push the envelope just a bit further. She can wear beautiful textures
and prints and still look like a modern exec. The restrained use of
accessories, and the simple, figure skimming silhouettes keep her dresses from
veering into cocktail or date night territory.
Below are some of my favorite Mary
outfits that really capture the way she brings a fresh, modern twist to
an executive's wardrobe. You aren't going to find a beige skirt suit on
this woman!
Our first dress divides into a
striped skirt with giant palm fronds on the bust. This is a woman after my own
heart! Note that the scoop neck and cap sleeves follow the rounded lines found
in the palm fronds at the top of the dress and that the skirt's stripes are
also slightly curved. This, along with the consistent color palette, helps the
dress feel cohesive.

Next, we have a decadent butter
yellow. Seriously, someone might want to call Land o' Lakes. It's not gold, or
a soft Spring pastel. It's pure buttery goodness that pops against Mary's
coloring. Going with a solid color and minimal earrings helps to ground that
distinctive cross over of the bust and keep this one workplace
appropriate.
In the red and white dresses below,
Mary's love of a strong silhouette comes in to play. Don't look for
pleats, peplums or bohemian swirls here. She favors clean lines, in thick high
quality dresses, that neatly skim her figure. No need to break the dress into
halves with a belt or offset the neckline with dangling long accessories.
In this fantastic abstract
number, Mary proves that she's unafraid to showcase her youth when the
moment strikes. She's got a small geometric cutout in her upper midriff that
avoids the traditionally provocative areas while still adding a
slight edge to her look. There's also a nice geometric red/white color division
on the skirt that parallels that sharp triangular cut out.
How Dazzling. Crushing it with these Fashion Fridays! I love how she just goes for the bold. So confident. Stunning!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! She's a stunning actress and the bold choices only accentuate what she's already got going on!
