Fashion Crush Friday Is Coming!

When a woman says, 'I have nothing to wear!', what she really means is, 'There's nothing here for who I'm supposed to be today.' -Caitlin Moran

Set design and costuming are the silent, mood setting, heavy-lifters in TV and movies. A simple snapshot of a character's spike heels, rumpled bed head, or scuffed boots conveys an instant message.

After all, fashion is a multi-billion dollar industry for a reason. When we're choosing our clothes, we want to both reveal something desirable about ourselves and project character traits we value. Which means that when we identify with the gorgeous girl on Pinterest who manages to look casual and careless with a deep v-neck, rolled skinny jeans and oxfords, we're not really attracted to the individual items. We're attracted to what the combination itself conveys.

Could that shoulder tilt offer a louder "Who cares?" if she tried?
We know that with the right jacket we'd be sassy and saucy and sophisticated. Or refined, or devil-may-care, or delicate.

This is a good time to note that if Joan Rivers wasn't already dead, she'd probably have laughed herself to the grave by now. I'm not saying I belong in Bill Cunningham's street style snaps or that I have some refined eye for color. But like a lot of young women, I like fashion. And there's nothing petty or shallow or juvenile about that. Because fashion has a purpose.

Which is why I'll be bringing you Fashion Crush Fridays where I share the character or celebrity or trend that I'm completely crushing on. Get ready to see a variety of women, real and fictional, and follow along as I dissect the elements that make their style distinctive and worth of analysis.

We'll be kicking off tomorrow morning with an examination of the modern, youthful executive wardrobe of a character from Fox's new show Second Chance.
